Citizens Advice Bureau funding must be guaranteed - (30/10/08)

Bob Neill, The Member of Parliament for Bromley & Chislehurst, has signalled alarm over the future funding of Citizens Advice Bureau’s in the area following the Government’s decision to introduce Community Legal Advice Centres.

During Ministry of Justice questions in the House of Commons, Bob asked for assurances that the new service would not undermine the very important work that is carried out by the Citizens Advice Bureau.  In the House Bob asked the Justice Minister, Bridget Prentice M.P. to:

“..take account of the need to ensure that the roll-out of the community legal service does not prejudice the funding and operations of Citizens Advice? I recently met the excellent manager of our citizen’s advice bureau in Bromley, Angela Bragg. It provides a first-rate service, but there is a real fear that unless the creation of the community legal service is properly handled, it could cream off much of the funding and make some CABs no longer viable. That would be a serious loss to the communities they serve.”

Afterwards Bob said: “Angela Bragg and her team at Bromley Citizens Advice Bureau provide a vital service to many of my constituents.  Importantly, they offer a wider range of services that will not be provided by the Community Legal Advice Centres, whilst the new body might not necessarily be cost effective.  The Government needs to guarantee that CAB will be properly funded at the earliest opportunity.''
