Bob Neill says 'NO' to AV

There is a very real threat that Britain’s traditional voting system could be replaced by a complex alternative that nobody wants. If we do lose our tried and tested First-Past-the-Post system it would be a disaster for our democratic system, which is why I am actively campaigning for a ‘No’ vote on 5th May.

It is becoming increasing clear that:

1. AV is a complete waste of money. It’s a confusing and complex process that would require a huge amount of money and bureaucracy to make sense of it all. Rather than spending money on this pointless change, we should be ensuring that we get the very best value for every pound of taxpayers’ money.

2. AV won’t fix our politics. Of course there is a pressing need to clean up politics and make MPs more accountable to local people, but AV simply won’t achieve this.

3. AV is an unfair and obscure system. As with any election or competition, the winner should be the person that comes first, but under AV that is not always the case. Our own First-Past-the-Post system is far simpler and decisive.

Put simply, AV is an unnecessary political reform that would change our voting system from one which is well understood to one which is confusing and fundamentally unfair.

I, for one, do not want a system where the person who finishes third in an election could be declared the winner.

I would urge those who share my support of First-Past-the-Post to get out and vote ‘No’ next week.
